The 1% That Makes All the Difference

Avoiding Grain Overdrying

Posted on August 13, 2025
Have you heard of the 1% rule? When you sell your grain, you're actually selling a combination of dry matter and water. So, if the moisture content (% of water) of your grain is higher, you get more money for the same volume of grain. In short, the weight per volume increases, and as a result, you make more money. In opposition, if you overdry your grain by 1%, you will lose 1,16% weight.

Weight reduction (%) = 1 - (100% - 15%) / (100% - 14%) = 1.16% Having a solid understanding of drying principles helps reduce over-drying of your grains. That means lower energy consumption and more tons of grain to sell. The same goes for the principles of silo aeration. Mastering ventilation allows you to equalize the moisture content of your grains after drying and to maximize the allowable moisture content. In doing so, you maximize the weight of your harvest—and your income.
